After his acclaimed explorations of such Handel operas as Giulio Cesare and Rinaldo, René Jacobs now tackles the first great operatic success of the 'caro Sassone' (Venice, 1710), the climax of his Italian period. This version reconstructs the work in its original conception, the only one to combine explosive topicality with extreme dramatic cogency. As a result, this tale of amorous intrigues against a background of Roman history, the 'prequel' to Monteverdi's L'incoronazione di Poppea, emerges more fascinating than ever.

Who better to further explore Spanish Baroque music than Emilio Moreno and El Concierto Español? Their latest Glossa project tackles the dramatic work 'Iphigenia en Tracia' by one of the leading lights of the time, José de Nebra. Having recently given us the popular musical comedy 'La Tirana contra Mambrú' and Antonio Caldara's royal wedding commemoration, 'Il più bel nome', Moreno now looks to de Nebra who chose one of Euripides' Iphigenia stories for a mythological zarzuela.

While researching Vivaldi manuscripts in 2007, Italian conductor and musicologist Ottaviano Tenerani came across a fair copy of a 'serenata' for six vocalists, choir and a richly-scored orchestra that was signed with Handel's name. Extensive musicological research, including biographical reconstruction, stylistic comparisons, scrupulous examinations of the paper used and reports by international experts have corroborated Tenerani's initial hypothesis that 'Germanico' must be in fact one of the first works written by the young Handel during his stay in Italy.
