About the conductor Vaclav Neumann

The career of Czech conductor Vaclav Neumann was closely linked with the Czech Philharmonic. He was chief conductor on three occasions spanning 25 years, between 1948 and 1993. In addition he was principal conductor of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and musical general-director of the Leipzig Opera. Neumann entered the Prague Conservatory in 1940, where he spent the war years receiving instruction on the violin from Josef Micka. He also developed his skill with the viola and in 1945 helped found the Smetana Qt, a group for which he played viola. He also played the viola in the Czech Philharmonic in the years immediately after the Second World War. In 1948, he was appointed conductor of the Czech Philharmonic only to be replaced by Karel Ancerl in 1950. In 1964 he accepted the post of principal conductor of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. In 1968 with the arrival of Soviet troops in Prague, Ancerl departed his role with the Czech Philharmonic to be replaced by Neumann. Under his guidance, the Czech Philharmonic, already a world-class orchestra, grew in both ability and prestige. He stepped down as principal conductor in 1990, but because of problems appointing a successor, he returned for the third and final time in the 1992-1993 season.
