About the composer Wim Mertens

Wim Mertens born 14th May 1953is a Flemish Belgian composer, countertenor vocalist, pianist, guitarist, and musicologist. He studied social and political science at the University of Leuven (graduating in 1975) and musicology at Ghent University; he also studied music theory and piano at the Royal Conservatories of Ghent and Brussels. Known primarily as a composer since the late 1970s, Mertens' style, while continually evolving during the course of his prolific output, touches veins of minimalist, ambient and avant-garde, usually, however, preserving a melodic fundament to the forays that he makes into the worlds that he is exploring. His recording debut in 1980, For Amusement Only, is an electronic composition for pinball machines. Early landmark albums are Vergessen (1982), introducing Mertens first writings for ensemble, and Struggle For Pleasure, including ’Close cover’. The composition ‘Struggle For Pleasure’ was chosen by the French TGV ­ railway company for a national promotion campaign. Since 1999, 'Struggle For Pleasure' has been being used by Belgian telephone mobile company Proximus for its internal and national promotional communications. Mertens wrote the score for the soundtrack for Peter Greenaway's 1987 film, ‘The Belly Of An Architect’. The 1985 album ‘Maximizing the Audience’, marks the introduction of the vocal element in Mertens music. Throughout the years the composer has expressed the increasing vocal inspiration of his music on albums such as ‘A Man Of No Fortune, And With A Name To Come’ (1986) and ‘After Virtue’ (1988). ‘A Man Of No Fortune...’ was chosen by Marion Hänsel in 1994 to be the soundtrack of her film ‘Li - Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea’. 1989 saw Mertens return to ensemble writing with ‘Motives For Writing’.
