About the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams

Influential English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams was born in 1872 in the Gloucestershire Cotswold village of Down Ampney. He was educated at Charterhouse School, then Trinity College, Cambridge. Later he was a pupil of Stanford and Parry at the Royal College of Music after which he studied with Max Bruch in Berlin and Maurice Ravel in Paris. Vaughan Williams's composing developed slowly and it was not until he was 30 that the song ‘Linden Lea’ became his first publication. He mixed composition with conducting, lecturing and editing other music. He discovered English folk songs, which were fast becoming extinct at the beginning of the 20th century owing to the increase of literacy and printed music in rural areas. He travelled the countryside, transcribing and preserving many himself. Later he incorporated some songs and melodies into his own music, being fascinated by the beauty of the music and its anonymous history in the working lives of ordinary people. Vaughan Williams volunteered to serve in the Field Ambulance Service in Flanders for the 1914–1918 war, during which he was deeply affected by the carnage and death. He enjoyed a long and productive musical life. Hardly a musical genre was untouched or failed to be enriched by his work, which included nine symphonies, five operas, film music, ballet and stage music, several song cycles, church music and works for chorus and orchestra. He died in 1958 and is buried in Westminster Abbey London.
