About the artist Rolando Villazon

'Villazon is the real thing, a tenor with star potential and striking individuality.' The Sunday Times. Rolando Villazón has sung in opera houses and festivals across Europe and America. He has recorded his first three recital discs on Virgin Classics. His highly-praised debut recital of Italian arias was followed by a programme of favourites and rarities by Massenet and Gounod which won a 2005 Gramophone Award and was short listed for the 2006 Grammy Awards. His third recital, featuring arias in Italian, French, German and Russian, was released to great critical acclaim in February 2006. His fourth recital disc on the label, ‘Gitano’ (Zarzuela arias) under the direction of Plácido Domingo was released in February 2007. Rolando Villazon was born in 1972 in Mexico City, and at the age of 11 joined the Espacios academy for the performing arts. In 1990 he met the baritone Arturo Nieto, who introduced him to the world of opera and became his voice teacher, and two years later he entered the National Conservatory of Music to continue voice studies with Enrique Jaso. After winning two national contests in Mexico City and Guanajuato he became a student of the baritone Gabriel Mijares, with whom he continued to work before launching his international career. In 1998 he entered the San Francisco Opera's prestigious Merola Opera Program, taking part in master classes with Joan Sutherland and singing Alfredo in La Traviata. In 1999 he won the Prize of the Public, the Zarzuela Prize and second prize overall in Placido Domingo's Operalia competition, and in the same year made his European debut as Des Grieux in Manon in Genoa. In February 2003 he was acclaimed best newcomer in France's 'Victoires de la Musique'.
