About the artist James Gilchrist

English tenor James Gilchrist is a sought-after recitalist whose voice has been described as pure and sensitive with an even and beautiful tone. James Gilchrist began his working life as a doctor, turning to a full-time career in music in 1996. His phenomenal career spans opera and concert performances, along with 35+ recordings. He has worked with amongst others Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir in their celebrated Bach Pilgrimage, Ton Koopman and the Tonhalle Orchestra in Zürich, the Collegium Vocale, the Bach Collegium Japan and the Academy of Ancient Music. As a recitalist, he has appeared with Malcolm Martineau, Stephen Varcoe, Della Jones and John Constable. Operatic performances include Quint in Britten’s Turn of the Screw, Ferrando in Cosi Fan Tutte, Scaramuccio in Strauss’ Ariadne Auf Naxos, Gomatz in Mozart’s Zaide, Vaughan Williams’ Sir John in Love. Hyllus in Handel’s Hercules, Acis & Galatea, Evandre in Gluck’s Alceste and Purcell’s King Arthur at English National Opera.
