About the artist Dorothea Roschmann

The soprano Dorothea Roschmann was born in Flensburg, Germany in 1967 and sang as a child in the Flensburg Bach choir. In 1979 she began studying singing in Hamburg, New York, Tel Aviv and with Vera Rosza in London. In 1992 she made her opera debuts as Barbarina in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro in Vienna and Zerlina in Don Giovanni in Israel. Acclaimed in her Salzburg debut as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro under Harnoncourt in 1995, she has since returned to the festival as Mozart’s Ilia, Servilia, Pamina and Vitellia. Dorothea Röschmann has appeared at the world’s major opera houses, including the New York Met, London’s Covent Garden, the Opéra Bastille in Paris, and the Vienna State Opera, in repertoire ranging from Handel’s Semele to Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress. She has performed in concert with the most renowned orchestras and conductors all over the globe, and is also a welcome guest at festivals such as the Utrecht Early Music Festival, the Handel Festival in Halle and Göttingen, and the Edinburgh, Munich and Schwarzenberg festivals. Her recital partners have included tenor Ian Bostridge, mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená and bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff. For Deutsche Grammophon / Archiv Produktion Dorothea Röschmann has recorded Handel’s Messiah with the Gabrieli Consort and Players under Paul McCreesh, and secular cantatas by Bach with Musica Antiqua Köln and Reinhard Goebel; she performed the roles of Nannetta in Verdi’s Falstaff with the Berliner Philharmoniker under Claudio Abbado, Pamina in Mozart’s Zauberflöte with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, again under Abbado, and most recently the Countess in Mozart’s Figaro with Anna Netrebko, the Wiener Philharmoniker and Nikolaus Harnoncourt.
