Background: This CD bears witness to Jos van Immerseel’s experimental approach, letting us experience these works with forces very close to what Prince Esterházy was accustomed to hearing. Here, the two Haydn symphonies are performed with radically different forces - 23 musicians for the 'Trauer' Symphony and the piano concerto, against just half that for the 'Farewell' Symphony. A vibrant homage to a masterly composer heard all too seldom.
