Background: Bassist, Al Swainger alongside an excellent group that includes reeds master Alan Barnes on alto saxophone, pays homage to one of the greatest saxophonists in jazz - Art Pepper.
Art Pepper's compositions, many of them tinged with Latin influences, and the recordings of his poignant, emotive playing still speak with an immediacy and directness that attracts a wide range of listeners. His playing always dazzled from his earliest, virtuosic, rhythmically daring style, to the darker hues of his almost disturbing later work, when, after years of incarceration and involvement with drugs, he had honed his style into one of overwhelming emotional intensity. Bassist, Al Swainger, a fine instrumentalist and relative newcomer to the scene, formed 'The Art Trip' to celebrate music from all periods of Art's extraordinary career. He chose a selection of Art's compositions and balanced them with several standards that the altoist really made his own. Craig Milverton, on piano, has always been a fine trio pianist and he really shines on this recording, both in his comping duties and in his inspired soloing. Nick Millward on drums really worked at getting an individual approach on each track, finding his own way through the material. Alan Barnes on alto has always been hugely influenced by Art's playing, and is in inspired form in this setting, bringing out the essence of the master, without sacrificing his own individuality. |
