Background: Rihm's Music for Three Stringed Instruments, written in 1977, is an ideal work through which to approach him. It is a work which, at an early stage in his career, brought together all his characteristics. During the work's sixty minutes one must concentrate on the happenings as they occur, prepared at every moment for unexpected incidents which give no clue as to what will happen next, uninfluenced by the question of whether this work is an oversized three-movement string trio or an eight-movement suite or whether there are any criteria according to which its tonal signals can be captured in traditional 'forms'. Wolfgang Rihm, born 1952 in Karlsruhe, was the quintessential child prodigy. Growing up in what he himself later called 'a city bursting with culture', he experimented with many different artistic forms of expression and first tried his hand at composition at the age of eleven. |
