Background: Szymanowski's deeply penetrating approach to Arabic-Persian culture is particularly significant. The Hafiz Songs are his musical testimony. Unlike most European composers who have interested themselves in the orient Szymanowski did not attempt to give his music an eastern colour nor did he ever use Arab or Persian melodies or scales. Rather his unerring intuition succeeded in extracting and generalizing the most basic qualities of oriental music. Sorabji - the eccentric English pianist and composer of Indian descent - wrote of the Hafiz settings as 'music of a radiant purity of spirit of an elevated ecstasy of expression' going on to describe the score as glowing 'with gorgeous color rich yet never garish nor crude like a Persian painting or silk rug'.
