Background: In comparison with chamber and vocal music piano music occupies a relatively small place in Kodály's oeuvre. His early piano pieces were influenced by Hungarian folk music but later works also show evidence of impressions gained on his travels: In Paris Debussy's music impressed him profoundly and this influence is evident in several of his compositions for instance in the Meditation on a Theme of Claude Debussy. The Dances of Marosszék may justly be called the best of Kodály's piano music, in Kodály's view they 'conjure up a vision of the vanished fairyland of Transylvania'. |
