Background: The three conductors on this CD have one thing in common: they were born in Silesia (formerly a part of Germany. today a part of Poland). Walter Damrosch became one of America's most influential musical figures and is remembered for his devoted mediation of German music to America. He conducted many first performances (Parsifal, Symphonies by Brahms and Tchaikovsky) and world premieres (Gershwin's famous Piano Concerto in F and An American in Paris). From 1927 - 47 he was musical director of the NBC. Leopold Reichwein was Bruno Walter's successor at the Vienna Court Opera in 1913 and music director of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (1921-1926). he managed the Bochum Opera from 1926-1938, then returned to Vienna where he recorded with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra. Herbert Sandberg became conductor at the Volksoper Berlin in 1923 and assisted Bruno Walter and Leo Blech. In 1926 he went to Stockholm as conductor at the Royal Opera House. From 1964 to his death he was music director of the State Theatre in Malmo. |
