Background: The flawless singing of the Accentus chamber choir combines with the fabulous voices of Sandrine Piau and Stephane Degout in this very special chamber performance of Brahms's masterwork. Brahms informed his publisher in 1869 that he had finished a piano reduction of his monumental German Requiem. This score was to do much for the work's fame in those days before sound recording, and was even used to accompany its very first performance in the worthy surroundings of Victorian England, with a modest chorus of thirty singers. It is this version, called the London version that is presented in this new recording. Brahms's powerful piano writing is given its due weight by two matchless interpreters of the Romantic repertoire, Brigitte Engerer and Boris Berezovsky. The choral parts that convey from start to finish the message of certain consolation for the inevitability of death, among the most moving in the whole repertoire, are given to the Accentus Chamber Choir. |
