Background: One of the pillars of the repertoire, the Symphonie Fantastique is still one of the richest, most innovative, evocative pieces of music ever written. Eschenbach gets right to the heart of its dreamlike (and nightmarish) essence and instils in 'his' Orchestre de Paris an inspiration that will be the talk of orchestral afficionados.

This CD deserves to be called an event for more reasons than one: it is Christoph Eschenbach's first recording as Musical Director of the Orchestre de Paris and it also marks the inauguration of Berlioz Year, leading up to the bicentenary of the composer's birth in 2003.
