Background: The first album ever recorded by Leon Fleisher, in 1956, reissued for the first time on CD. Born in San Francisco in 1928 of Russian Jewish immigrants, Leon Fleisher studied with Artur Schnabel. In 1942 Pierre Monteux gave him the opportunity to make his debut, calling him 'The pianistic find of the century'. Two years later, Fleisher was invited to perform Brahms' D-minor concerto, still under Monteux, at Carnegie Hall with none other than the New York Philharmonic. In 1952 he was the first American to win the Queen Elizabeth competition. In 1956, Leon Fleisher recorded his first album for Columbia Records and chose Schubert's Sonata D960 that remains to this day one of his preferred works (he recorded it again in 2004). The superficially simple Ländler D790 intelligently complete the programme of this exceptional 28 year-old. Fleisher went on to become a legendary teacher, continuing the Austro-German legacy of Schnabel. |
