Background: Hugh Wood has been a prolific and eloquent broadcaster and writer on music as well as composer. Already well-known and respected in new music circles, he first came to prominence with the premiere at the 1965 BBC Proms of his vocal-orchestral Scenes from Comus, after Milton. Major works have included several concertos and a Symphony though it is chamber music he prefers, with its capacities for the intense and thoroughgoing working-out of ideas in polyphonic discourse. His music is remarkably rich in suggestion, ranging from expressionism to poignant lyricism as well as exciting admiration through the quality of its craftsmanship. |
