Background: Vals was active during a period of great political and cultural transition in his Catalonian homeland, as the 18th century saw an enormous influx of Italian musicians. Vals was very well informed about all the musical innovations around Europe, and made use of them in the interest of Hispanic music traditions. For Vals, Spanish music was characterized by the use of complex polyphonic formulas and by its great 'propriety' which suited church music, in contrast to foreign (especially Italian music). His songs or tonos, recorded here display the importance he placed on the voice and text at the expense of instruments, which Vals felt were less appropriate in sacred compositions, in contrast to the Italian style, which he felt was better suited to opera or theatre. |
