Background: The Prophetiae Sybillarum are Lasso's most original work. In 1560 Lasso presented Duke Albert of Bavaria with a precious manuscript of Prophetiae, handwritten by himself. What is so striking in this work is the musical language the composer has chosen: Lasso seems to have considered chromatic writing as the only way to express the indefiniteness and estrangement caused by the prophecies of Sybils. In this work, where counterpoint rarely appears, Lasso creates a structure full of dramatic tension with words graphically illustrated and silence to intensify narrative tension. |
