Background: Sofia Gubaidulina studied piano and composition at the Kazan Conservatoire, passing in 1959 to the prestigious Moscow Conservatoire. After the diploma, she became a freelance composer in 1963. The Chaconne comes from this period; a piece in which attachment to classical forms is still evident. The composition of the Sonata is almost contemporary to the Chaconne, being from 1965 but only published in 1974. These were the years when she was ostracised by the Soviet establishment and the Sonata is the most fascinating of Gubaidulina's piano works. Musical Toys, written for her daughter, recalls other famous collections of short pieces such as Kinderszenen or Children's Corner. And finally the last two pieces (Toccata-Troncata, 1971 and Invention, 1974) are closer to small divertimenti, of brief duration but of noteworthy technical demand. |
