Background: One could define this particular discographic edition as 'American' because it combines the most important symphonic works of Dallapiccola's mature years, all fruit of the vast and extremely intense relationship that the composer enjoyed with the United States from the 1950's until his death; apart from the Due Pezzi per Orchestra, which slightly precede Dallapiccola's transcontinental crossing. In Italy, from the mid-1930's, being a pioneer of dodecaphony, would prove difficult. Towards the end of the 1940's Dallapiccola turned his focus outwards to the United States, where his music achieved immediate recognition. In this new environment, the composer realised his full development along a path dug between two fundamental guidelines: a solid humanistic education and a strong interest in German musical culture. In dodecaphony he found the means of carrying out his entire musical discourse. |
