Background: Although German-born, Joseph Martin Kraus was one of the most important composers in 18th-century Sweden. The works for pianoforte comprise a fairly limited number of compositions: nonetheless Kraus was quite clearly a composer at home with the forms and language of late eighteenth-century piano composition. Almost an exact contemporary of Mozart, tuberculosis ensured that Kraus outlived him by only a year. His influence was immense not just as a composer, but as innovative conductor and enlightened teacher. He also composed a number of orchestral and chamber works but he was especially renowned for his operas, which used Swedish libretti. |
