Background: Luci mie traditrici is one of the most successful operas by Salvatore Sciarrino. In France, Germany, Austria and his native Italy he is regarded as one of the leading composers of our time. His concert and stage works are widely performed and this, his most recent opera, has already been seen in Vienna, Paris and Brussels. The plot of this chamber opera is based on the authentic story of the Renaissance composer Gesualdo who had his wife murdered out of jealousy. The music is a version of an old elegy by Claude Le Jeune from 1608. Lyrics consist of a morbid list of details of the body of the beloved (the eyes, the lips, the hair on the cheeks) and so create a powerfully unusual combination of eroticism and putrefaction. The theme of the work is the transience of love. The plot: One morning a man and his wife, Count and Countess, invoke their eternal love. At mid-day the Countess is gripped by the passion for a guest to whom she gives herself. In the evening the Count forgives her and she returns. In the night, as she opens the curtain to her bed in the presence of her husband, she sees on it the body of her lover. The Count then kills her, and, stabbed by her husband's dagger, she collapses over her murdered lover. |
