Background: Christoph Graupner served as composer and Kapellmeister to the court in Darmstadt from 1709 until his death. Highly regarded by his contemporaries, when he and Johann Sebastian Bach were both considered for the post of Kantor at the Thomaskirche, the Leipzig city council opted for Graupner. Bach was only offered the position because Graupner was unable to obtain a release from his position in Darmstadt. Between 1730 and 1735, he worked on a huge collection of no less than 5625 four-part canons on the same theme - many baroque composers saw the canon as a sort of 'philosopher's stone' of musical writing and mastering the form meant making an impact as a composer. Though blind later in life, he produced immense amounts of music, including 1,418 sacred cantatas, 24 secular cantatas, 113 symphonies, some 50 concertos, 80 suites, 36 chamber sonatas, keyboard music, in addition to his operas. |
