Background: The present recording is intended to shed light on Donatoni's piano works hitherto overshadowed by the fame of Françoise Variationen. Thus Rima, the other masterpiece, appears with seven more piano pieces composed over a long period, from 1955 to 1996, encompassing a wide range of styles.

This overview of Franco Donatoni's works for piano also includes two pieces for two pianos. Rima 1983 is in Donatoni's later style, marked by verve, playfulness and virtuosity. The title contains both an allusion to the name of the dedicatee, Maria Isabella De Carli, and also to the presence of rhyming musical phrases. Rima is in two parts continually evolving and always different from each other and this type of construction typifies Donatonis' favourite approach to form.
