Background: To mark the holy year of 1675, the brotherhood of San Giovanni Battista dei Fiorentini organised a cycle of religious events. Stradella was entrusted with the huge task of composing a work on the martyrdom of the Brotherhood's patron saint. Apart from being Stradella's most famous composition, this oratorio is one of the high points of the baroque in Rome and a major work in the music of the second half of the 17th century. It contains a huge amount of musical experimentation: innovative rhythms and daring harmonies help to clarify the text clearer than anything else the composer might have done. The oratorios were intended to be instructive and reinforce the precepts of the faith in listeners, which Stradella does to great effect. |
