Background: Instrumental pieces published by the itinerant violinist and composer Marini, dedicated to the veteran patron Archduchess Isabella Clara Eugenia of Austria. The dedication to the Archduchess, regent of the Spanish Low Countries and employer of such famous English expatriate composers as Peter Philips and John Bull, was possibly penned in an unsuccessful effort to secure a place as director of her court band. One of the largest instrumental books of its timethe book is preserved in the University Library of Wroclaw, Poland, due to the work of the great German-American musicologist Alfred Einstein, who transcribed it before it was damaged in World War II. |
