Background: The Madness of Old Age, first published in 1598, was reprinted seven times, including one version in Cologne, the last being published by Bartholomew Magni in 1622. The success of this musical experiment induced the composer to write another similar work entitled Youthful Prudence, published in Milan, and then subsequently reissued under the title of Youthful Wisdom, in 1628. These works were performed for the amusement of the aristocracy who controlled local trade and then retired to country villas. Summer and carnival were two moments of relaxation where the art of making 'delightful and untaxing' music filled their time. |
