Background: We chiefly remember Arthur Sullivan as a composer for voice and orchestra; in particular of the operas which he wrote to libretti by WS Gilbert. It should not be forgotten, however, that Britain's leading composer of the Victorian era is represented by works of almost every other genre. Some of these were constant themes in Sullivan's long and distinguished career, this is true of his chamber and orchestral works. The two pieces for string quartet were both written when he was barely 17. All of them display an enchantingly youthful freshness and warmth, and are proof of Sullivan's immense natural talent. The Yeomans String Quartet has received a variety of awards and scholarships. CATALOGUE NR: SOMMCD233 |
