Background: Treviso-born violinist Giuliano Carmignola comes from a distinguished family of musicians. A winner of numerous international competitions on the modern violin, Carmignola began to explore the world of Baroque music and Baroque interpretation. His work with the Venice Baroque Orchestra marks his ever-increasing commitment to the recovery of the distinctive musical style of Venice. Andrea Marcon is one of the leading interpreters and scholars of music from the Italian Baroque. Recognized throughout the continent for both his technique and his interpretative insight, Marcon has received awards from such diverse competitions as Innsbruck, Bruges, and Bologna and top international awards for his recordings. Along with his authoritative editions of works by Frescobaldi and Merulo, Marcon has recorded several albums as a harpsichord soloist. Marcon founded the Venice Baroque Orchestra, which he has directed since its inception. In 1998 he was appointed professor of harpsichord and organ at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland. Founded in 1997, the Venice Baroque Orchestra is the first period ensemble to emerge from Venice. It is devoted largely to the recovery and performance of works of the Venetian Baroque, and has presented the first modern-time performances of works by Claudio Monteverdi, Antonio Vivaldi, Francesco Cavalli, and Benedetto and Alessandro Marcello. The Venice Baroque Orchestra has collaborated with the Teatro La Fenice in the recovery of forgotten operas by Handel, Cimarosa and Cavalli. Along with an extensive touring schedule abroad, the Venice Baroque Orchestra is the resident orchestra of the Baroque Festival of Venice. |
