Background: Between 1937 and 1944 Carl Schuricht was a principal guest conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and of the Dresden Philharmonic. In 1944 he left Germany to start work with L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. After the Second World War he conducted the Vienna Philharmonic at the re-opening of the Salzburg Festival and in 1957 he was invited to conduct at the Chicago Symphony Festival and also appeared as a guest conductor at the Berkshire Music Festival at Tanglewood. During the 1960s he continued to conduct the VPO and gave his last concert with the VPO in 1965. Two years later he died at the age of 86. This handsomely packaged 10CD set was re-mastered at Abbey Road Studios. |
