Background: Mischa Elman made a sensational Berlin début on 14 October 1904. The explosive arrival of Heifetz in 1917 badly dented his career and by the 1920s Elman was sounding old fashioned. To his credit, he never tried to be anything but himself and he kept working - he had been rehearsing the day he died, 5 April 1967. Mischa Elman moved to Decca in 1954, after more than 40 years with Victor. The partnership with accompanist Joseph Seiger had begun in 1952 and Elman greatly depended on Seiger, with whom he developed a close relationship. |
