Background: On November 24 1956, a plane carrying Guido Cantelli to the United States where he was about to fulfil an engagement with the New York Philharmonic, crashed in flames shortly after taking off from Orly airport in Paris. Everyone aboard perished. Thus ended the all-too-brief career of a musician whom many believed was destined to become the most commanding conductor of the second half of the twentieth century. At the time of the crash, Cantelli, born in 1920, was a mere 36 and had recently been appointed Principal Conductor at Milan's La Scala. It also seemed that he was on the verge of being named Music Director of the New York Philharmonic, a post that went, of course, to Leonard Bernstein. |
