Background: Otto Klemperer made his début with the Berlin Philharmonic on 16-Apr-1921 with what Wolfgang Stresemann (later the orchestra's Intendant in the Karajan years) called a 'daring' all-Schoenberg programme. When Stresemann finally succeeded in inviting Klemperer back to the Philharmonic in 1964, the conductor chose a favourite Bach Suite and an early Mozart symphony (one, incidentally, which he had already performed with conspicuous success with the Radio Orchestra some years before) and the Pastoral. |
