Background: Since his death in 1965 Hans Knappertsbusch has been afforded a mixed posthumous reputation. In some quarters he is venerated as one of the great German conductors from a golden post-romantic era. But there are also widely quoted tales of unprofessional behaviour on the rostrum at rehearsal and occasionally in performance.
