Background: 1961 was a very rich year indeed for Otto Klemperer - 76- years-old when the performance on this record was given as the climax of the Philharmonia's October / November Beethoven cycle. Since the mid-1950s Beethoven concerts under Klemperer had become very special events in the musical life of the British capital. For Gareth Morris, the Philharmonia's long-serving principal flute, Klemperer, 'the greatest conductor I encountered, looked upward - never at himself. He was simplicity itself - the simplest of all, and therefore the most natural. He never disturbed players with unnecessary movements. He had a wonderful pulse, a natural rhythm, all the right feelings about everything'. |
