Background: Gérard Souzay was considered the leading exponent of mélodies in the postwar era. Where Fischer-Dieskau tended to sing the two Schumann cycles on this CD through an overt, intense identification with the texts, words given great prominence, Souzay following, in Dichterliebe at least, the example of his French predecessor Charles Panzéra took a quieter, more reflective view of Schumann. The verities of even tone and pure line are seldom upset in these thoughtful readings. In op.24 Liederkreis the reading is full of insight into words and music, the quick vibrancy of the singer's soft-grained tone a notable advantage here. He can have seldom sung with so much sheer beauty as here. Souzay and Baldwin recorded eight of Hugo Wolf's Mörike settings, each one an undoubted masterpiece in terms of matching text to music. These performances are all shaped with care for the interior meaning of these fine miniatures. |
