Background: Gérard Souzay was considered the leading exponent of mélodies in the postwar era. Souzay probably had a larger repertory of Lieder than any French singer of his own, perhaps any day. From the outset of his recital career Lieder was almost as an important part of his programmes as mélodies. In Schubert, his approach was closer to that of pre-war German baritones such as Herbert Janssen, whose sympathetic, soft-grained tone Souzay's very much resembles, and Gerhard Hüsch than to Fischer-Dieskau's. As this CD reveals, he preferred the older manner of interpretation, concentrating on even line and beautiful tone. |
