Background: Gérard Souzay was considered the leading exponent of mélodies in the postwar era. His mellifluous, supple voice was allied to a bright intelligence and an innate feeling for the appropriate style. He also had a successful career on the concert platform, but his appearances in opera were limited to three or four roles. In Falla's Seven Popular Spanish Songs the sheer beauty of the writing is revealed by the baritone's smooth, warm singing. It is his understanding of melody and structure that is so telling. His account of Ravel's L'histoire naturelles conjures up Ravel's marvellous settings of Jules Renard's subtle and amusing poems that reflect human as much as animal foibles. In Fauré, Souzay yields first place as an interpreter to no one. Nobody who wants to understand the essence of this composer's mélodies and their interpretation can afford to be without these wonderful offerings, now happily restored to circulation. Although Souzay returned to the composer in many later recordings, none is as beautifully sung or so naturally interpreted as these. |
