Background: Roger Désormière's Decca recordings with the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire in the early fifties, chiefly of ballet music, find him at his peak. The French influence on The Sleeping Beauty, the Perrault-inspired tale, has rarely emerged more clearly than it does under Désormière, whereas the colours of Ippolitov-Ivanov's Caucasian Sketches, upon which he lavishes such idiomatic care, emerge as authentically Russian. Some idea of the dramatic qualities of his conducting can be heard in his recording of Ibert's Divertissement. This miniature masterpiece, an arrangement of brief and lively scenes, first gained recognition under Désormière's baton. |
