Background: When this recording of Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto first appeared in Feb-1962, it received a welcome in the pages of The Gramophone comparable to that accorded to Emil Gilels's 1957 EMI recording. Yet, though the Gilels went on to be regarded as a gramophone 'classic', the present recording survived in the catalogues for the best part of a decade, was transferred to the budget-price Classics for Pleasure label in 1972 and, despite receiving a second ecstatic Gramophone review, quickly disappeared from view. Names sell records and even in the heyday of their fame neither Richter-Haaser nor Kertész were big-time names. |
