Background: Everybody knows Saint-Saëns' third (organ) symphony. Far lesser known are his first and second symphonies (composed in his youth), which are included on this album. The first symphony is composed for a king size orchestra, the second is far more intimate for smaller forces. The works on this album are performed by the Radio Symphony Orchestra Frankfurt, conducted by Eliahu Inbal. The recording is made in 1975 in the Erlöser Kirche in Bad Homburg, Germany in 4 channel surround sound and is released for the first time in this format on hybrid SACD. |
