Background: Antonio Vivaldi was the pioneer of the bassoon concerto. Like its predecessor, the dulcian, the bassoon was used exclusively as a basso continuo instrument until the beginning of the 17th century. But by 1700 the introduction and development of new instrumental forms, such as the solo concerto, finally announced a new era for the bassoon, in which Vivaldi was to play a leading role. In his concertos, the composer exhausts the technical performance possibilities of the instrument. |
