Background: Nicolai Gedda born in Stockholm in 1925 from a Swedish mother and a Russian father has had a long career as one of the premier tenors in the world. He made his debut in 1952 in Stockholm. He gained the attention of Herbert von Karajan who took him to Turin and Milan. In 1954 he made his debut at the Paris opera where he stayed for several years. He appeared in all the great opera houses and concert halls of the world and made over 200 recordings and is still considered a strong performer of his age. In his youth he had sung in Russian Orthodox churches so the music he recorded for this album in Paris in 1975 was close to his heart. |
