Background: The arrival of the Early English Organ Project instruments in Durham for a three-month residency in 2004 prompted the Cathedral’s musicians to try to discover more about the organs which had stood in the Cathedral in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In particular, they were interested to know how the instruments might have been used in conjunction with the Cathedral’s manuscript collections. The return of the instruments in 2007 provided an ideal opportunity to put some of their thoughts into practice, and this OxRecs recording is one of the fruits of this process of research and experimentation.
