Background: This stunning recording of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.5 is taken from performances by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Manfred Honeck that took place in 2006, two years before Honeck took up his current position as the orchestra's chief conductor.
This CD has been produced from recording of concerts that took place in 2006 when Manfred Honeck first conducted Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. These early performances were so successful that the orchestra later decided to appoint him as its full time music director. Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck began his career as conductor of Vienna's Jeunesse Orchestra, which he co-founded, and as assistant to Claudio Abbado with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in Vienna. Since September 2008 he has been serving as Principal Guest Conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in Prague. After several highly successful guest appearances as conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, he was appointed its Music Director in 2008. |
