Background: In 1895 Mahler wrote to his mistress, Anna von Mildenburg, 'My symphony will be something like the world has never heard!'. It was premiered in 1902 and then remained a rarity in the concert hall until the revival and reassement of Mahler's symphonies in the 1960's. Symphony No.3 is one of the finest of all Mahler's compositions.
