Background: Willem Mengelberg was born in Utrecht in 1871 to German parents. His first official post was as music director at Lucerne but he is perhaps best remembered as the conductor of the Concertgebouw Amsterdam with whom he worked for almost 50 years. This recording of Franck's Symphony in D is taken from German Telefunken discs which have a fine bass response. The transfer was originally made by Brian Crimp. |
