Background: 'No musical establishment in Europe could boast so many great virtuosi as the court orchestra of the Elector of Saxony at Dresden', according to an eighteenth-century writer. So it was entirely logical that Vivaldi, the great champion of the concerto for virtuosi, should compose for this Baroque equivalent of the Berlin Philharmonic. Vivaldi became friendly with the leader of the Saxon ensemble, Johann Georg Pisendel, when he became his pupil in Venice. Amongst the most notable results of their encounter were around fifteen concertos 'for many instruments' specially conceived for the Dresden formation, which was particularly renowned for its wind players. This programme presents two highly contrasting pairs of concertos: the robust fanfares of RV 569 and 574, with their hunting horns and oboes, are set against the cantabile melodies and dramatic atmosphere of the two concertos with recorders. It is logical, too, that these richly orchestrated concertos should attract the Freiburger Barockorchester, whose repertoire and performance practice are modelled on those of the celebrated Dresden orchestra. With their fiery performances of these masterpieces they show that they are its worthy successors. |
