Background: This was the breakthrough work of Tauno Pylkkänen, dubbed the 'Puccini of the North'. Mare and her Son was composed during the war years 1942-43. Despite its glowing reviews, however, Mare and her Son received only 12 performances. The last was in November 1953, making this 2004 performance the first for over 50 years.
